The Toilets project aimed to address the need for sanitation infrastructure in Dolatpura, one of our partner communities, because of its major health implications for women. The Toilets team worked over the course of a year-and-a half to develop a design for an aerobic composting toilet to accommodate the needs of a family of twelve. The prototype was successfully built in May 2016. However, due to the long-term timeline of a project on this scale, lack of means for a US prototype, and the expense of the technology, we determined that it would not be feasible or appropriate for a university team such as ours to effectively iterate beyond the current prototype. Since making this decision, we have continued to navigate cultural barriers to use and maintenance, and monitor the toilet’s use and effectiveness through communication with our partners and integrated sensors.
